Genesis 8:1-22

Go ahead and read through that real quick, I’ll wait…

Ok, so far we're moving right along in the whole 'Noah's Ark' story that we've all heard, over and over, since birth. I realize that this isn't something new for most folks, and that if you are anything like myself, you just skim right through this chapter. We've all heard it, we've all seen this story on felt 'Children's Church' boards, we've all read it and/or had it read to us since we were old enough to be dressed in uncomfortable outfits and shoes and made to sit next to the old 'I bathe in floral perfume' lady at church. So why bother even trying to find something clever, something funny, something relevant here, right? Rather than turn it into a skit, or a show, I just want to walk through it and let you in on what it speaks to me. Unlike some, I don't hear God's voice booming from the heavens, with perfect diction, and a slightly British accent. God speaks to me in a biting, sarcastic, humorous, and humbling way. He knows me well enough to know this is the way I will understand, appreciate, and apply His lessons for me. So please bear that in mind as I share my thoughts.

Right from the git go, we're told that God remembered what was going on with this whole global flood situation and the remaining living things aboard the ark and then turned on the galactic blow dryer to dry the place out a bit. My first thought was, 'And God Remembered'? Really? Like He had kinda dozed off there for a few months, basking in the overall decrease in earthly ridiculousness that had caused Him to get fed up enough to flood the planet in the first place. Kinda like when you snap out of a really good daydream and realize that it's way too quiet in your kids' room, or that you haven't seen the dog in while, or that you left the water running in the bathtub. You know that you'd better go check things out to make sure your few moments of peace weren't wearing a price tag with the cost of new kids' room walls, new couch cushions, or new bathroom carpet. That said, I know that wasn't the point of this first verse. The point was, that no matter what kind of hot water you find yourself in, God remembers you, and He will send a breath of fresh air to pass over your situation, when the time is right.

The second verse tells us that God not only dried the place out a bit, but that he turned off the faucets. Making the point that it's not enough to repaint the kids' walls, or restuff the cushions, or dry out the bathroom floors. You have to deal with the source of the situation, as well, unless you want to inherit a lifetime of repainting, restuffing, and recarpeting.

Verse three reminds us that world changing situations don't go away in a day. It's a continual process that takes time. God has it well within His power to clean up every 'disaster' in our lives at the snap of a finger, with a word, in the twinkling of an eye. However, like any good parent, good teacher, or good mentor, He chooses to use time to coax, teach, and guide our understanding of what we are coming out of, and in process dump a little appreciation in our laps along the way.

'The ark rested...' Even though the process of drying out the entire planet was not yet complete, He allowed the ark to rest from the constant motion of the waves. He knows when we just need a rest from the constant roller coaster ride of life. When your world takes a turn for the worse, He wants to clean it up for you. Sometimes it takes a flood to clean up the messes we've made, and sometimes we feel like we're stuck in a boat, being thrown around by the waves, getting a little sick of the cleansing process. Even before your world is restored to Godly order, He gives you a place to rest. It's not safe to exit the boat just yet, there is still a little more work to be done, but at least the constant motion is over. It takes time to get used to solid ground when you've grown accustomed to the rock of the boat. God knows that, whether you do or not.

Finally the tops of the mountains could be seen again. You've been on one long, crazy ride, and now you can rest, and see the world being revealed in a new light. The reassurance that you will walk on solid ground again soon. Just be patient.

After the rain had let up, Noah was ready to get off that boat. He sends out a raven to search for dry land. He sends out a dove every week, on a repeat mission for land, for viability of life after the flood. The first week the dove comes back empty handed. Noah knows that it's not over yet. Week two, better results, olive leaf. Noah knows that the end of this cruise is near. The third time was the charm, no more dove. Noah knows that the dove found a new, safe place to nest, or at least had found a place better than stuck inside that boat. Either way, a success, and Noah knows that he can open the doors and start his new life afresh and anew. God knows that we have trouble with the unknown, with patience, and affords us grace as we start to send out feelers to test the stability of this new world we encounter after a trial. He affords us to take baby steps as we learn to trust Him. He allows us to taste and see that He is good.

Finally, the door is opened, the cover removed, and the new world, dried from the previous flood, awaits. God speaks to Noah and tells him to empty that boat and get to work. Take your family and all your pets and release them. Let them start over. Let them free from the confines that had bound them through the trial, to explore the world renewed by God. God will let you know when to open the door, when to remove the cover and start over. Sometimes it seems like God hasn't spoken to us in ages while we're riding out the storm, but the truth is, God is speaking in the storm. Sometimes we have to go through the flood before we can hear his voice clearly. Sometimes the old Etch-a-Sketch of life needs to be turned upside-down and given a good shaking before we can start anew. When that's been done and God opens the door, get right back out there and make a difference in your world.

After Noah had released his family and the animals back out into this recreated world, the first thing he did was have a barbecue, and God thought it smelled great. Noah recognized that God had picked them up from the mess of the world around them, protected them through the storm, and put their feet back on solid ground. He knew to give God the credit and thank Him for what He had done. This is also good advice. Celebrate when God pulls you through a 'disaster' of a situation. Have a cookout and give God the credit for His help, protection, and guidance.

God said that He wouldn't punish the earth or other living things because of the stupid decisions of man again, like He had done with the flood. From now on, for as long as the Earth itself remained, it would have regular days, seasons, weather patterns, and the concept of sewing and reaping. This is what God does. After your world has been messed up, after you've been taken through the storm, he wipes it all clean, gives you a new start, and restores balance and order to your world. Let Him do what He does best.

Remember, it's not about what you've done, but about what He did. God will take your messed up world, wipe it clean, and recreate a new world for you if you have sense enough to get aboard.

A solo dice game is played as follows. On each turn, a normal pair of dice is rolled. The score is calculated by taking the product, rather than the sum, of the two numbers shown on the dice.

On a particular game, the score for the second roll is five more than the score for the first; the score for the third roll is six less than that of the second; the score for the fourth roll is eleven more than that of the third; and the score for the fifth roll is eight less than that of the fourth.

To open the box you need to turn the dial 3 turns to the right and stop at the score for the forth roll. Then a full turn to the left, past the score for the forth roll, stopping at the sum of the scores from the forth and fifth rolls. Then turn the dial right and stop at the score for the fifth roll, and pull.

Now you've got the box open and your quest has just begun.

First, a couple basic things you may not know about your beloved new toy

• Amazon says that I won't be billed for using their WhisperNet wireless service, so why do they need my credit card info?

from Amazon's Kindle 2 page:

"3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle; no annual contracts, no monthly fees, and no hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots ... No monthly wireless bills or commitments. Amazon pays for Kindle's wireless connectivity so you won't see a monthly wireless bill. There is no wireless setup–you are ready to shop, purchase, and read right out of the box."

however a quick look at their 'Wireless Terms and Conditions' reveals these little details not posted in bold print with all their other 'features':

"Amazon provides wireless connectivity free of charge to you for certain content shopping and downloading services on your Device. You may be charged a fee for wireless connectivity for your use of other wireless services on your Device, such as Web browsing and downloading of personal files, should you elect to use those services. We will maintain a list of current fees for such services in the Kindle Store. Amazon reserves the right to discontinue wireless connectivity at any time or to otherwise change the terms for wireless connectivity at any time, including, but not limited to (a) limiting the number and size of data files that may be transferred using wireless connectivity and (b) changing the amount and terms applicable for wireless connectivity charges."

so be advised that it may be wise to stick to using the wireless downloading service only if you are downloading a book directly from Amazon's bookstore and use the tip below for downloading all your MP3, 3rd party ebook, picture, and personal text files via USB.

• Amazon plays fast and loose with the highlights and notes that you enter into your Kinde:

"Amazon will now remotely upload and store the user notes and highlights you take on your Kindle, which it then compiles into 'popular highlights.' I have no doubt that the feature provides some interesting data, but it's not clear that users realize their highlighting and notes are being stored and used that way. Amazon basically says there's no big privacy deal here, because the data is always aggregated. But it sounds like many users don't realize this is happening at all. Amazon says people can find out they added this feature by reading 'forum posts and help pages' -- but it's not clear how many people actually do read those things. While I'm sure many people are fine with this, others might not be. And it once again highlights a key concern in that the 'features' of your 'book' can change over time. Your highlighting may have been yours in the past, but suddenly it becomes Amazon's with little notice."

Now let's look at a few tips and tricks from all over the net

• Kindle USB Internet Hack from Jesse Vincent

You can connect to the Internet via a USB connection to a computer (rather than WhisperNet).

• Kindle ePub to .mobi Tool by Jesse Vincent

You can convert ePub files to .mobi format (which the Kindle 2 supports).

• Free Kindle Books via Kindle 2 courtesy CheseM at booksummit

After you sign into Amazon and choose Kindle store to search in:

type ” -domain ” (no quotes) into the search field. This will give you a list of free books offered by Amazon

• Pictures on your Kindle 2

You can load pictures on your Kindle 2

1. Connect Kindle 2 via USB to your PC
2. Create “pictures” folder on your Kindle 2
3. Create sub-folders for your photo albums
4. Dump images into these sub-folders
   The images that you put into a sub-folder will become part of the photo album
5. Unplug your Kindle 2 and go to the Home Page
6. Press Alt-Z on the Home Page to see photo albums among books
7. When you select one of these photo albums, the experimental Image Viewer starts

Tips for using the Image Viewer

1. Zoom In on the Picture – Q key
2. Zoom Out – W key
3. Reset Zoom Level for the Image – E key
4. Toggle Picture to Actual Size – C key
5. Toggle Picture to Full Screen Mode – F key
6. Pan Photo if its larger than the Kindle 2?s screen – With 5-way controller
7. Rotate the Image – R key

Also, do not press the "1" key in the image viewer as that brings up a bug.

• Recharge your Kindle Battery when it’s at 20%

Kindle 2 has a LiPo battery, so keep these things in mind

1. You can re-charge your Kindle 2 battery at any time, without using up its life. There is no memory and there is no ‘let it drain completely before charging’ rule
2. You should maximize by re-charging your Kindle 2?s LiPo battery when it’s at 20% charge left. The worst thing you can do is let the battery completely drain out.
3. Do not recharge it to full every day. The battery is happiest in the >20% charge, <80% charge range (close to 80% is better than close to 20%).
4. Always keep the Kindle 2 cool (not extreme low temperature cold, just cool). High temperatures are bad for the Kindle 2 battery. As are extremely low temperatures.

• Delete a Book or item from your Kindle 2

1. Press the Menu button to go to the Kindle 2 Home Page
2. Use the 5-way to go to the item you want to delete
3. Press Left on the 5-way to bring up the Delete selection
4. Press the 5-way to confirm that you want to delete the item

Note: Books you have purchased are available in the Archive selection even after deletion – you can reload them.

• Restart Kindle 2 in 2 seconds.

1. Go to the Home Page.
2. Press the Menu button to go to the Menu.
3. Navigate to Settings and press 5-way to go to Settings.
4. Press Menu button Again.
5. Navigate to the ‘Restart’ option, and press 5-way to select it.

Kindle 2 Shortcuts that may come in handy

1. Jump to page ‘x’ on the Home Screen – Press the number ‘x’ on the keypad and then press the 5-way.
2. Also you can use the Next Page and Previous Page buttons to circle through the pages.
3. Alt+B – Bookmark.  Alternate: Press 5-way up or down to go to cursor mode, and then press 5-way twice.
4. Alt+Home – Kindle Store.
5. Press ’Menu’ button to see Wireless Network on top of the screen (top right), Time on top of the screen (top center) and Memory Remaining on your Kindle 2 on Top of the screen (top left).
6. Alt+Shift+G – Screenshots. Hold down Alt and Shift buttons and then press G.
7. Alt+Shift+M – Start MineSweeper.
8. Alt+G – refresh the screen and eliminate Ghosting.
9. Alt+R – reload when in web mode
10. Keeping Alt+Shift pressed, Press a number button (1-9) to cycle through the various line spacing options.
11. Shift+Sym – start and to stop TTS (Text To Speech or Read To Me in Kindle 2). You have to keep Shift pressed down and then press Sym.
12. While TTS (Text To Speech or Read To Me in Kindle 2) is on – Use Shift button to Pause or Resume it. Note: this might be Space (spacebar).
13. While TTS (Text To Speech or Read To Me in Kindle 2) is on – you can switch between male and female voices, and change voice speed by using Alt + Aa keys and then using the 5 way controller.
14. To start TTS (Text To Speech or Read To Me in Kindle 2) at a particular place on a page, move the cursor to the spot BEFORE starting TTS.
15. When playing any MP3 audio (music or audio book), Alt+Space – play or stop background MP3 audio.
16. When playing any MP3 audio (music or audio book), Alt+F – Skip to the next MP3 audio track.
17. When playing any MP3 audio (music or audio book), you can press Space to start or pause it.
18. Within Newspapers and Magazines, 5-way controller to the left – previous article.
19. Within Newspapers and Magazines, 5-way controller to the right – next article.
20. Within Newspapers and Magazines, Press the 5-way – A list of sections within the periodical will appear.
21. Within Newspapers and Magazines, On this Sections List page – Selecting the Number to the right of the Section Title will take you to a list of Articles within a section.
22. Type "@help" in the search box – will show a list of supported search shortcut commands

This new game will be a random combination of various tasks, puzzles, and riddles. It will involve you being photographed with various objects, and with various people. You will be given a random collection of items that you will need to join with other items from other people. Your goal will be to complete a collection of items that are all your favorite color, orange.

You'll receive a clue that references an object and a person. You will need to join your non-naranja version with the properly colored orange version found with the specified person.

Proof that you collected the correct item from the correct person must then be uploaded to this site before you will receive your next clue. This 'proof' will be in the form of a photo of you, with the item, with the specified person.

There is no time limit, so feel free to take your time and work through them as you wish.

I hope that you enjoy this little game, and the places and people that you will need to visit to complete it.

I choose you, Deanna, to be my partner, my friend, my lover, my family, my wife. Now and forever, it's you and me against the world.

Today is a new day and a new game awaits. You'll receive the first clue soon.

I know that your days are busier now than ever, therefore this game will not follow a daily schedule, it will follow yours.
