In a previous post, Comic Chat (Identity Crisis | Superman: Speeding Bullets), I discussed the DC Comics Elseworlds imprint. My new found love for this comic style, coupled with my personal bias toward Superman, led me to this great work of comic book art. Superman: Red Son, in similarity to Superman: Speeding Bullets that we discussed earlier, posits the scenario that Superman's ship crashes in the Ukraine of the then U.S.S.R., on a collective farm, rather than the Smallville, Kansas field that we're used to. This sets him on a completely different path than the one of DC Action Comics fame.
I really want you to read this for yourself, as it is such a fantastic book and inventive retelling of the Superman story. You'll find alternates for other classic DC characters, and real world historical figures, in various places throughout the story. Superman is mentored by Joseph Stalin, rather than Jonathan Kent, who is dead, and Martha Kent, who runs a small hardware store in Smallville. Richard Nixon is assassinated, and succeeded by John F. Kennedy, with Marilyn Monroe as his second wife, he dumped Jackie after he is elected. The nuclear arms race is replaced by a superhero race, etc.etc. etc. All kinds of superhero and historical shifts are scattered throughout the three book set.
If you haven’t read this series, let me implore you to do so. I’ll even go so far as to provide a hid.im below. If you like the series, please pick up a copy over at Midtown Comics, the best, hands down, comic store on the planet. I’ve gone through a few local comic stores and never received the personalized and professional service that was demonstrated by the folks over at Midtown Comics.
