Bible Babble (Genesis 5:1–32)

Before you get into this post, you should probably read the disclaimer from the previous post, Bible Babble (Genesis 1:1-31).

Genesis 5:1-32

Go ahead and read through that real quick, I’ll wait…

So this chapter isn't rocket science, just a lot of genealogy and some basic addition.  We won't spend a lot of time on this as there's not a lot to 'interpret' within this chapter.  Let's just walk through this and keep a scratch pad handy.

This chapter starts off with a bit of a titling, to let you know what you're in for for the next bit.  This is a book of Adam or man's notable generations, along with the hint that there is going to be a pattern.  Man was made in God's image, and Adam's kids were made in Adam's image, so on, and so forth.  Ok, so we all get the idea.  Now get your pencils and papers out and let's begin.

Adam lived 130 years, had Seth, lived another 800 years, and died.  130 + 800 = 930 years.  Oh, and he had other sons and daughters.
(as a subpoint here, you must realize that for at least a sizable amount of history, incest was the primary method of reproduction--moving on--)

Seth lived 105 years, had Enos, lived another 807 years, and died.  105 + 807 = 912.  He also had other sons and daughters.

Enos lived 90 years, had Cainan, lived another 815 years, and died.  90 + 815 = 905.  He also had other sons and daughters.

Cainan lived 70 years, had Mahalaleel, lived another 840 years, and died.  70 + 840 = 910.  He also had other sons and daughters.

Mahalaleel lived 65 years, had Jared, lived another 830 years, and died.  65 + 830 = 895.  He also had other sons and daughters.

Jared lived 162 years, had Enoch, lived another 800 years, and died.  162 + 800 = 962.  He also had other sons and daughters.

Enoch lived 65 years, had Methuselah, lived another 300 years, and --HOLD THE PHONE-- didn't die?  He hung out with God and God just decided to snatch him up instead.  One second hanging out on Earth, then, POOF!  Gone.  Disappeared.  Where does one sign up for this method of departure?  Anyway, 65 + 300 = 365.  He also had other sons and daughters.

Methuselah lived 187 years, had Lamech, lived another 782 years, and died.  187 + 782 = 969.  Ok, now first of all, you're going to see that this is the World Record Holder for years lived on earth.  Now look a little closer at the numbers thus far and it will also become obvious that with the birth of Lamech, we now have 9 generations all present on earth at the same time.  I'm not sure I'd like to be in charge of hosting that family reunion.  Not to mention the unknown number of 'sons and daughters' that would have been running around.  Don't worry, he also had other sons and daughters, as well.

Lamech lived 182 years, had Noah, lived another 595 years, and died.  182 + 595 = 777.  He said that Noah was going to be the one to get them out of this whole 'back breaking farm labor' that Adam had so graciously established for them.  He also had other sons and daughters.

Noah lived 500 years, had Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and --Cliffhanger--

That's it.  Chapter 5 in a nutshell.  Tune in next time to find out more about this Noah chap and his boys in chapter 6.
