Comic Chat (Y: The Last Man)

It’s been a long time coming, but I finally had time to write up a quick post about the Vertigo series, Y: The Last Man. I started reading it a while back and mentioned it in The People Have Spoken. I finished it and I have to say that it has been one of my favorite series to read. The series, by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, is now complete at 60 issues.

Like usual I don’t want to spoil the experience, so I’ll leave some of the pertinent details out. The basic plot line, something has triggered the simultaneous death of every male on the planet except for Yorick Brown, and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. Every mammal with a Y chromosome, including the unborn, keel over instantly, leaving the women alone on Earth to clean up the mess and find a way to bring order to the chaos. It’s a testament to the societal roles of men and women as it explores the possible outcome if all men were erased from the picture. Yorick and Ampersand struggle to make sense of this situation and to keep their existence as the sole remaining male members of the planet a secret from the others.

It’s a great story filled with the threat of humanity’s ultimate extinction looming on the horizon. Each issue is filled with action, drama, and conflict as well as great bits of humor throughout. Due to the themes explored in this series, it’s not a comic for the kiddies, so be warned. If you can handle what you’d see on prime time television, the themes in this series won’t overwhelm you. The ultimate cause of the incident isn’t clearly explained, however several possibilities are sprinkled throughout the issues.

If you haven’t read this series, let me implore you to do so.  I’ll even go so far as to provide a hid.im below.  If you like the series, please pick up a copy over at Midtown Comics, the best, hands down, comic store on the planet.  I’ve gone through a few local comic stores and never received the personalized and professional service that was demonstrated by the folks over at Midtown Comics.
